Fences Unlimited At The Crystal Coast | 203 Jacob Drive, Morehead City, NC 28557 | (252) 247-6033
Fences Unlimited isn't a company that drove into Garner chasing new-construction growth. We've been headquartered right here on Old Mechanical Court since the 1980s, when Emmett Goodwin Sr. started the business a couple of miles from where our crews load the trucks every morning.

A lot of fence companies serving the Triangle are based somewhere else and treat Garner as a drive-to market. We're the opposite — Garner is where the business started, and it's still where the shop, the trucks, and the crews are.
Founded here, not franchised in. Emmett Goodwin Jr., who runs the company today, was born and raised in Garner. His father, Emmett "Garland" Goodwin Sr., started Fences Unlimited in the 1980s.
Nothing gets subcontracted. Every Garner installation is performed and supervised directly by the owners with dedicated crews — not handed off to a rotating subcontractor.

Garner's growth corridor has shifted south and east — Timber Drive, Vandora Springs, and the Aversboro Road corridor are seeing the most new rooftops, with subdivisions like Clifford Glen, Oak Park, and Cleveland Bluffs going up alongside older, established streets closer to downtown. That mix creates two very different fencing jobs, and we handle both:
Freshly graded lots off Timber Drive and Aversboro often have compacted fill soil rather than settled native ground. We set every post in concrete regardless, but on fill lots we dig deeper and check compaction before we ever mix a bag.
Closer to downtown and along Cleveland Road, lots tend to be older with mature trees and root systems. Line placement and root navigation matter more here, and we walk every property line with the homeowner before we finalize a layout.
We confirm your district, check your plat, and flag HOA requirements before materials get ordered.
Garner is more particular about fence paperwork than some of the surrounding towns, and skipping it can mean a stop-work order or a rebuild. Here's what actually applies:
Stand-alone fences and walls need a Zoning Compliance Permit from Garner's Planning Department, filed through the Town's online Permit and Inspection Portal. Plan for roughly five business days of review.
In most residential districts (RA, R2, R4, R8, MF-A, MF-B, RMH) and CMX areas: 4 feet max in front and corner side yards, 6 feet for solid fences in side/rear yards, and taller open-style fencing allowed in side/rear yards.
Most newer Garner subdivisions carry HOA design guidelines on top of the town's rules. Get that approval in writing before we start.
All wood fencing uses treated lumber with posts set in concrete — no exceptions, whether it's a starter-home backyard off Aversboro or a larger lot near White Oak. Commercially, we regularly work Garner-area sites for contractors including D.W. Ward Construction, ST Wooten, and Bobbitt Design Build.

Timber Drive corridor, Aversboro Road, Vandora Springs, Cleveland Road, White Oak, downtown Garner, and the newer subdivisions pushing toward the Clayton line. If you're inside Garner's town limits or its ETJ, we've likely already got a project or two nearby.
Most stand-alone fences and walls need a Zoning Compliance Permit from the Town's Planning Department, filed through the Permit and Inspection Portal, with about a five-business-day review. We handle this paperwork as part of your installation.
In most residential districts, 4 feet is the max in front and corner side yards. Solid fences can reach 6 feet in side and rear yards, with taller open-style fencing allowed there too.
If your neighborhood has an HOA — and most newer Garner communities do — get written approval first. We're glad to review your HOA's fence guidelines with you before we finalize a design.
Typically one to three days once the permit clears and materials are on site, depending on fence length, terrain, and material.
